2005 FESTIVAL REVIEW

June 11th 2005 - Rock Concert

Radlett held its first Rock Concert ever on Saturday 11 th June in the afternoon. The weather was chilly and overcast but did not deter the eleven rock groups who came from schools all over Hertfordshire onto the Tabard Rugby Club grounds together with family and friends to compete in our first “ Battle of the Bands”.

The stage was set up at the bottom of the field, with the Hare Krishna sound team in charge, and the Judges sat on a raised plinth (thanks to Newberries School staging) for a clear view of the stage.

Chiltern FM was present at the event with two of their Black Thunder cars; and a selection of food and drink stalls including burgers, ice cream and drinks and other stalls were there.

An eminent panel of Judges presided over the events; including Spencer Cobrin (ex drummer with Morrisey and the Smiths), Dennis Collopy (lecturer in Music Industry Management at Buckinghamshire Chiltern University College), Trevor Churchill and Norman Jopling from ACE Records, Graeme Collette from Chiltern Radio, and Mr John Read, Chief Executive of Harpenden Building Society and Mary Hooton from Simmons Estate Agents, two of the main sponsors of the event.

Bands in the competition included Central 9 (from Fearnhill School in Letchworth), Subcide (Verulam), 6 th Edition (Hertswood), The Edge (Queens), The Coquettes (Bishops Hatfield Girls), None The Less (Bushey Meads), The Art of Opposition (Barclay School), Broken Circle (Watford Boys), The Free Radicals (Rickmansworth), Disregarded (St Michael's School) and The Spiders (Hitchin Boys) and the afternoon's music was kicked off with a performance by ColourHouse, a local band from Mill Hill.

The winners were Broken Circle from Watford Boys who won two days worth of recording time making a CD in a state-of-the-art recording studio at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, and the runners up were Subcide from Verulam School, who won recording time at the Basement Studios in Watford, also to make a CD. Watford Boys Schoo , which the winning band attended, received electric guitars, a drum kit and keyboard donated by local businesses.

12th June 2005 - The Carnival Fair

The Carnival Fair, held on the Phillimore Recreation Grounds, on Sunday 12 th June was really well attended. The village turned out in force for a great afternoon of family fun with a background of terrific carnival music, from the steel band of the Whitmore High School in Harrow, and also a half hour slot from Broken Circle, the winners of the previous day's Battle of the Bands, from Watford Boys' School.

There was a great show of classic cars for the car enthusiasts and a fun fair and entertainment for the kids. A tremendous selection of craft stalls kept the Mums happy, while the tea tent had queues all afternoon due to the terrific selection of home made cakes on sale from the Wives Group, while the shade provided by the Scouts' wonderful vintage marquee was a significant attraction also! The Hare Krishnas were in great demand for their popular Indian food stall while their bullock cart did circuits of the field with a full load of people all afternoon, and for those non vegetarians on the field, the DP Clarke butcher's barbecue was also very popular.

The Dog Show, as always, was a significant attraction, with Sandra Mackenzie's Fritz (long haired Dachshund) being awarded the Judge's Favourite (more details of Dog Show winners below).

The main prize in the raffle draw was a holiday to the value of £1000 donated by Mark Warner holidays and Beaver Travel, which was won by Michael Wright of Aldenham Avenue .

See below for photos of the event, so have a look and see if you can see either yourself or your friends on it.
