History - Ice Cold in Aldenham
When we move forward almost to the present day the last ice age moved down upon us and two fingers of ice
stopped one at Aldenham and the other at Finchley.
Man and animals lived south of the ice and moved north again when the ice melted. These people were known as
Neolithec people and were mostly hunters, gatherers and lived in surrounding hills in this area especially out
towards the present day Hunton Bridge.
As the ice and glaciers melted so the seas rose and this country started to separate from the continent. Present
day geologists cannot agree as to how this came about. Some think that there was a land bridge from East Anglia
across to Holland and others that there was a land bridge further south. It is believed that huge lakes joined up
and the melting ice was aided by the emptying of the Thames and the Rhine. The old Proto Thames which ran through
Wall Hall and Park Street may have emptied out at today’s Wash. However it happened the crossing of man and animals
from the continent to us or vice versa ceased.
